Back to School, Back to your Mat, Back to You!

September is a good time to take stock, to slow down and to reflect after what may have been a busy summer for us all. A summer without restrictions and rules, a summer where we could travel more freely, a summer where we needed to be a little careful with our spending and a summer which was pretty darn hot to say the least! How was your Summer?

This months theme is the 5th Path of Yoga, Karma - the path of action and of selfless service.  The practice of Karma Yoga involves performing an action without any expectation of any reward in return, renouncing the fruits of the action and being an action of love. We remember fondly of our times with our dear friend and fellow Yogi Zoe, who we said a sad and sudden goodbye to a year ago this week.

For North Yorkshire residents we have a welcoming and friendly group in Boroughbridge Methodist Hall on Wednesday evenings from 18:00 - 19:00. This class will offer you many benefits for the body and a positive mindset. We bring various styles of movement together to work with you and your 'Modern Body'. As we are all unique we all require different things to support and maintain our mind and body through life. This class is suitable for all levels, particularly those who are new to movement, Yoga, Pilates and stretch & release, rehabilitation from injury or illness and have been recommended to try yoga or movement exercises by a medical professional.

Our monthly Tutorial  is Fish Pose, scroll all the way down to watch the video and register for free tutorials or sign up for a 7 day trial of our Indyoga Video on Demand for full length sequences.

I look forward to seeing you on your mat or board in September.
Warm regards

Awwwww, look at all of your pets that love to practice Yoga with you. 🐾

Roll your mat out, and a couple of seconds later, your pet is sitting all over it. It’s a well known fact that pets adore the squishy, scented goodness of yoga mats as your smell lingers on them after you use them. While we may not be able to detect our own unique fragrance, our furry friends can. Cats in particular like the soft texture of the mats, allowing them to knead, claw and paw at it. (Not great if your mat cost a fair few quid) and dogs just love to be involved with anything if you are. 🐾

Pets find it stimulating when you breathe, move and create a deeper sense of awareness. Their senses become highly engaged and it's also a really good way to bond with your pet. So after your Cat and Cow warm ups and your Downward and Upward Dogs, give them a little attention for joining in with your practice, they will love you even more after all the wonderful energy you have created. 🐾

For those unable to attend our classes on zoom or in person classes, then a Video
membership could be just what you are looking for!

If there's one thing Yoga Instructors love to share is that using props in our practice is not only for beginners. Props are used to make things accessible where appropriate; blocks or bolsters fill the space between you and the mat or straps bring you closer together. But they can be so much more than that. Sometimes I enjoy using blocks as a way to switch things up, make things feel different and challenge the body in a slightly different way.

I have been using these Stuhoo blocks and strap for the last 2 years for outside classes as they are lightweight and perfect for travel. They are strong & durable and do a great job of 'propping' you up. They are non-toxic, comfortable with smooth edges and a great colour. I can highly recommend this combo set, as they are probably one of the best foam blocks I have used. The strap is a great addition to the set, and they all come in a bag with a guide to use them in your practice.

If you use INDYOGA10 at checkout you will receive a 10% discount off the retail price of 8.99. Click below to order yours today?

If you already have these props and are looking for bolsters, any other props or mats, please message me as I have other small businesses  that I can link you to rather than buy from large global sellers.
Stuhoo Blocks and Strap Set

Fish Pose (Matsyasana) relieves tension in your neck, throat, and shoulders. This posture stretches and tones the front of your neck and your abdominals. whilst lengthening and stimulating the organs of your belly and throat. Fish pose strengthens your upper back and the back of your neck. Try this every day for a week and notice the difference in your upper & middle back and chest opening

Take modifications as you need them or consider using a prop, such as a bolster/pillow/dharma wheel or the Stuhoo blocks above. Place the prop underneath you following the length of the spine for a supported variation with longer holds and remember to support the head and neck. Please know your range of motion and honour your body in this posture, observing medical conditions and injuries. Enjoy your practice.
