April Meeting Summary

Membership came together on April 14 at the Embassy Club West for the annual Supertech session.  We had three excellent presentations.

Julia Keen, Professor of Architectural Engineering and Construction Science at Kansas State University, presented on Building Performance vs Building Certification.  Julia provided an in-depth explanation of ASHRAE's beQ rating system.

Lincoln Pearce with IMEG, presented on the renovation of Iowa State's Marston Hall.  The project was awarded first place in the category of existing educational facilities ASHRAE Technology Award.

Our last presenter was Steve Taylor with Taylor Engineering.  Steve provided a thorough overview ASHRAE Guideline 36,High-Performance Sequences of Operation for HVAC Systems.

Thanks to all of our presenters and planning committee for putting these sessions together!

Engineer's Week Proclamation

February 20-26 was Engineers Week.  Here is this years proclamation from the Governor's office.  Thanks Matt Jesson for submitting this!

President's Corner
Well, I mentioned Punxsutawney Phil’s poor track record but unfortunately it looks like he was right this year.  I’m not sure where tornadoes fit into the prediction though, we might need a new animal to predict spring tornadoes.
The year is winding down with our last in-person meeting being the SuperTech.  The CTTC (event) committee worked hard to put together a great program so if you run into Dan Blake or Tjaden Ahrens, be sure to thank them for their efforts.
May will bring the Spring Fling – the committee is finalizing the details so everyone should be receiving e-mail invites shortly.  Also in May is the CRC conference in Minneapolis, the links to their signup page are on our website (  Check out the webpage for additional information.
It looks like our yearly Habitat for Humanity day will be Friday, June 10th this year.  Similar to past years, there will be a morning and afternoon session.  Each session will have 10 spots and I think we’ve filled them up in the past so if you are interested in this great volunteer opportunity, be sure to sign up when we send out the signup information.

ASHRAE provides options for you to determine where to place your donation. The Iowa Chapter is looking to increase its endowment and would appreciate it if you would place your donation in the box available next to “Endowed Research via ASHRAE Foundation”, check the box indicated that you understand that those funds are restricted for the support of ASHRAE Research, and put “Iowa Chapter” in the “Existing Fund Name (If known):” box. From there it’s as simple as any other online purchase with a credit card.
Don’t forget that ASHRAE is a 501(c)(3) organization.  Contributions are deductible as allowed by law.  A receipt will be sent to the address listed above.

If you would still prefer to donate by check or have any further questions about the donation process, please contact Laura Russo or Nick Seymour.
