Welcome Iowa Chapter to a new ASHRAE society year!
 
Certainly these weren’t the global circumstances I expected when I started my journey through the officer ranks three years ago, but we will make the best of it! My name is Adam Puls and I am the ASHRAE Iowa Chapter President for 2020-2021. I grew up in Des Moines, went to Iowa State (Go Cyclones!), and promptly moved back to Des Moines to begin my career in engineering. I have been a consulting engineer for over nine years and have been active in the Iowa Chapter since 2014. As chapter president, I am striving to offer great learning, social, and networking opportunities to all of our members. I want to be sure to thank our previous Chapter President David Poetting for all the work he did last year and for teaching us how to host successful virtual meetings. With the community health concerns we still face, having the experience to run these meetings online will be key to maintaining active engagement throughout the chapter. Even as we hope to move back to a normal, in-person meeting structure, we will strive to make our meetings available virtually to make attendance easier for all members.
 
We have already hosted three Board of Governors (BOG) meetings, one virtual chapter meeting, and the golf outing! The chapter owes chapter member Corey Metzger a big thanks for presenting at that chapter meeting. His presentation on ASHRAE’s Covid-19 task force’s return to school guidelines was fantastic. We had over 160 people in attendance including region and society level officers. Clearly the impact of the Iowa Chapter reaches beyond central Iowa!
 
We hosted the annual Fall Frolic at Briarwood on August 31^st. Our golf committee worked hard to ensure we were able to have this outing. All golf outing funds go directly to our Research Promotion (RP) campaign.
 
Our October meeting this year will be our annual student night. Details are still being finalized, but we are working to be sure we can maintain engagement with the Iowa State Student Chapter even if we are unable to meet in person. We will also be awarding several scholarships to some well-deserving students.
 
The “November” meeting is scheduled for December 1^st and will be an opportunity for all of us professional engineers to grab one of the required, sometimes elusive, ethics professional development hours. This year we are hosting ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer (DL) and ASHRAE Society President Elect, Mick Schwedler. Mick will spend an hour discussing ethics and two additional hours presenting on more technically focused topics. This meeting is planned to take place in person, however, ASHRAE currently has banned DL travel to chapters. Mick has graciously agreed to present virtually if the travel ban remains in effect.
 
The BOG has been working hard to put together another fun and fulfilling ASHRAE year. I hope we can attend most meetings person but realize that may be unlikely for the foreseeable future. Even if we can’t meet in person, I hope you’ll take the opportunity to engage with our local chapter. Food Bank Efforts & "Pack the Pantry"

A joint effort with local industry, local government, Iowa State University Extension, and our chapter has helped over 100 grant applications secure nearly $450,000 in funding for walk in coolers projects at local food pantries. Applicants can receive up to $10,000 to increase refrigeration capacity making more perishable, locally-grown foods available to their customers. A special thanks to Justin Barrett, Tim Conrad, and Jon Scanlan with HyVee for spearheading the efforts to assist with this program.

Turbomachine Expander Offers Efficiency, Safety for Heating, Cooling
Purdue University researchers developed a device to decrease energy consumption of the vapor-compression heat pump cycle, which is commonly used in homes, businesses and vehicles for cooling and heating. The team created a novel turbomachine expander that helps harvest previously wasted energy used in the process of moving the air from high to low pressure. The device can be used as a control agent within an existing heat pump. Read more

Astronauts Replace Coolant Pumps on International Space Station
Two astronauts spent more than six hours installing replacement coolant pumps during a spacewalk on Monday. The astronauts attached the 350-lb (159 kg) pump module to the 6.8 metric ton Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS), plugged in power and data cables and spliced together eight existing coolant lines. The AMS was not designed to be serviced in orbit, so connecting the coolant lines while working in pressurized spacesuits was especially challenging. Read more

MIT Creates System that Cools Without Using Electricity
A new system provides cooling with no electricity by using the process of radiative cooling. The device, which has no moving parts, uses an aerogel insulation that blocks and reflects visible rays of sunlight. The system can keep fruits and vegetables from spoiling and can help double the time the produce remains fresh in remote places where reliable power for refrigeration is not available. Read more

Thermal Comfort Model Measures Body Shape With Sensors
A team at Carnegie Mellon University has created the first model that combines environmental information with data on an individual's body shape to determine thermal comfort. Information is aggregated to find the temperature that the most occupants possible will find comfortable. The system estimates body shape information from depth-imaging sensors, which are less privacy-invasive than approaches such as cameras. Read more

Water Battery Powers Air-Conditioning Systems
A three-story "water battery" is producing enough energy to power a university's air-conditioning systems, which is reducing its reliance on the grid by more than 40%. The water battery is a thermal energy storage system that uses energy generated by a 2.1-megawatt photovoltaic system to cool 4.5 megaliters of water resting inside a three-story tank. The campus' air-conditioning systems use the cooled water. Read more
